In Fahrenheit 451, there was a semi- happy ending. The "happy" part was that Montag survived and found people like himself. The "bad" part was that almost everyone died due to the bombing of the city.
In 451, Montag ended up loosing everything, his house, his wife, Clarisse, his job, and his sanity. But for Montag loosing everything was worth it. Sticking to his beliefs was his main goal, he did and didn't care what would happen to be able to stay true to that. Or maybe he didn't necessarily think it trough.
In 1984, there was also a semi-happy ending. Winston survived but not truly as the same person. The Ministry of Love had changed him into someone that learned to love Big Brother and to understand the principles of the party- doublethink, etc.
In the case of 1984, we want a happy ending, but it's not reality. 1984 shows the power of the party- that the party is immortal and every mutation is fixed. It shows the general representation of power. Winston was, for the majority, a representation of the socities "mutation". But Orwell might have wanted power to win in order to show the desruction of individuality that power holds.
In both novels it portrayed the truth and destruction of the government. It showed the evolution of characters and how they change due to events, lonliness, fear, and strength.

Contrast Plots
Contrast Plots:
- Four ministries vs one government: In 1984 four different ministries regulate people and their instincts or anything that goes against the government but Fahrenheit 451 is only regulated but one government instead of four.
- How the people in the books face their problems: In 1984 the government tries to change the people's views before they kill them. In other words they work at their problems before giving up. In Fahrenheit 451 they destroy their problems before even trying to solve them. For example burning the books right when they discover them and Montag telling Faber to burn everything he touched to get rid of his trail.
- Time period: 1984 is set in a specific year while Fahrenheit 451 is set in the distant future and Bradbury doesn't specify a year.
Compare Plots
Compare Plots:
- War- Both in Fahrenheit 451 and 1984, the majority of people brush off war, but Montag and Winston both view war as a concern. Also, Julia and Mildred don't want to talk about war because they find it boring.
- History- Any document, film, art, photos, etc. is altered and the original copy burned. Any item of news, expression or opinion which conflicted the government were never allowed on record. Anything against the government or "peace" for the people is burned or put to a stop.
- Government- They are scared of their people and them having power or knowledge: 4 partis and rules and book burning.
- Memory- People don't remember what year it is nor less care. They don't care about anything factual. People don't know history. Both societies, they people let them selves create this big trap of ignorance.
- Telescreen and The Hound- The telescreen always watches people and shows the Two Minutes of Hate, videos of hate related things, or political things. The Hound is also always watching and always blood thirsty to keep people in order.
Compare Characters
Compare Characters:
- Montag vs. Winston: Montag and Winston view their own societies as restricting and censored to an extent that is not positive for the greater good of humanity. They begin to realize this and how ignorant people are, which sparks them to think in the unfavorable way towards the party. They make change in their societies.
- Clarisse vs. Julia: Clarisse and Montage bond when she introduces him to a new perspective of society. She is 13 years younger than Montag. Julia has a lot common with Winston. She is also 13 years younger than Winston. They are both engulfed with their friends or lover of how they were able to connect on a different level.
- Mildred vs. Katherine: Mildred is too obsessed with her "family" (her wall television). Montag is not truly in love with her; unhappily married. Katherine follows the governments rules and ideas strictly. They both are the resemblence of the majority of the ignorant society that was formed by people not caring.
- Faber vs. O'Brien: Faber sat back and let Montag do all the dirty work. They met once a while back and then finally met back up. O'Brien was the person he had met once and taken a while to meet again when he was ready to have opinionated his own ideas about the government."We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness"
- Beatty vs. O'Brien: Beatty is a follower, he has knowledge and tries to manipulate Montag into believing that books and knowledge leads to "non- peace". O'Brien aslo tries to change Winston's behaviors and instincts against the party; Big Brother.
- Clarisse vs. Syme: They both disappear/ vanish from everyone's memory and existence.
