The Endings

In Fahrenheit 451, there was a semi- happy ending. The "happy" part was that Montag survived and found people like himself. The "bad" part was that almost everyone died due to the bombing of the city.
In 451, Montag ended up loosing everything, his house, his wife, Clarisse, his job, and his sanity. But for Montag loosing everything was worth it. Sticking to his beliefs was his main goal, he did and didn't care what would happen to be able to stay true to that. Or maybe he didn't necessarily think it trough.

In 1984, there was also a semi-happy ending. Winston survived but not truly as the same person. The Ministry of Love had changed him into someone that learned to love Big Brother and to understand the principles of the party- doublethink, etc.
In the case of 1984, we want a happy ending, but it's not reality. 1984 shows the power of the party- that the party is immortal and every mutation is fixed. It shows the general representation of power. Winston was, for the majority, a representation of the socities "mutation". But Orwell might have wanted power to win in order to show the desruction of individuality that power holds.

In both novels it portrayed the truth and destruction of the government. It showed the evolution of characters and how they change due to events, lonliness, fear, and strength.
